Responsibilities

As a Scrub Scout, your key responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing and maintaining the operating theatre with the necessary instruments, equipment, and supplies for orthopaedic procedures.
  • Assisting the surgical team during procedures by anticipating their needs and ensuring a sterile environment.
  • Monitoring and managing surgical instruments and materials to ensure efficiency and safety.
  • Collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality patient care.
  • Adhering to hospital policies, procedures, and infection control standards.
  • Supporting the team in post-operative care and ensuring proper documentation.

Qualifications

To excel in this role, you’ll need:

  • Current registration with AHPRA as a Registered Nurse or Enrolled Nurse.
  • Proven experience as a Scrub Scout, with a strong focus on orthopaedic procedures.
  • Exceptional knowledge of surgical instruments, techniques, and protocols.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • A commitment to patient safety and high-quality care.
  • Flexibility to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.

Day-to-Day

Your day will involve:

  • Collaborating with surgeons, anaesthetists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure seamless surgical procedures.
  • Preparing and organising surgical instruments and equipment before each procedure.
  • Maintaining a sterile field and ensuring compliance with infection control standards.
  • Providing hands-on support during surgeries, including passing instruments and assisting with equipment.
  • Conducting post-operative checks and ensuring all instruments are accounted for.
  • Participating in team briefings and debriefings to continuously improve processes.
